Concert - Friday 13th of November at 8pm, St Swithins
Church, Walcott, Bath
Repertoire: Bizet's Symphony in
C, Bernstein's 'Mambo' from the West Side Story Symphonic Dances
The South Cotswold Youth Orchestra has a growing reputation for exciting performances of mainstream repertoire, and this Autumn's course illustrates this perfectly. Bizet was only 17 when he wrote his magnificent Symphony in C, as an assignment for his composition teacher Gounod at the Paris Conservatoire. Whilst quickly moved his attentions on to new compositions, peers compared the work favourably to Mendelsohnn's 'Midsummer Nights Dream' which was written at the same time.
As if all this wasn't enough, we'll also be performing Bernstein's exhilarating Mambo from his orchestral suite of symphonic dances for West Side Story. Bernstein wrote the suite just 4 years after the first production of the musical. It's also one of the BBC Ten Pieces for Secondary Schools, which is launched in October. Thornbury Area Youth Music is a Ten Pieces Champion, and in 2014-15 performed many of the Ten Pieces for Primary with SCYO taking a number of the pieces into their concerts. This work will continue with pieces from the secondary repertoire, with this performance starting the year!
